Koggala Lagoon is one of the top birdwatching locations in Sri Lanka. The rich biodiversity in the lagoon attracts a wide variety of bird species, both resident and migratory.

What You’ll See:

Kingfishers: These bright, colorful birds are commonly seen darting above the water in search of fish.
Herons & Egrets: These elegant birds can often be spotted along the banks of the lagoon.
Cormorants: Often seen perched on branches or diving for fish, cormorants are common around the lagoon.
Migratory Birds: Depending on the season, you might also encounter rare migratory birds passing through the area.

Best for: Nature lovers, photographers, and avid birdwatchers.

Tip: Bring a pair of binoculars and a field guide to identify different bird species. The early morning hours are especially good for birdwatching, as the birds are most active at dawn.
