Katuwana Fort

From Matara to Hakmana through Walasmulla and from there, a person travelling to Middeniya may come to Katuwana town about 5 km from Walasmulla. The key factor for increasing the historical significance of the Dutch Fort of Katuwana is that it is the best protected Dutch fort in the interior of the country. The Katuwana castle built in 1697 is the largest fort to be set up near the southern edge of the Kandyan kingdom, on the northern edge of the Dutch-speaking East Indian company. The main reason for the strategic importance of the site is facing the southern border of the Kandyan Highlands. Today, russa trees have grown and the person in the fort seems to be unable to see it, but in the ancient times it is noted that the distant areas were very visible to this place.
