History of painting in Sri Lanka runs back to the era of arrival of Arhat Mahinda who brought the message of Buddhism. Rock and wall painting in ancient cave temples belonging to Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Dambadeniya and Kandy periods of history are the living evidence of the advanced and well- developed craft of painting in the island. The world heritage cultural site, Sigiriya fortress is famous for its frescoes which are considered as great creations completed during the 5th century have used natural materials for colours . Also Sri Dalada Maligawa( Palace of the sacred tooth relic). Kaleniya temple and Goothami Vihara of Borella, Colombo are world famous creations.
